Smart where the weather is changeable. The Swiss will invest in folding solar panel roofs for their rest stops. They plan to build 45 of them, and once all are operational, they should be able to generate 35 megawatts under optimal conditions. Under these circumstances, they could provide enough power for 7,800 households.
As mentioned, the solar installations will be placed at rest stops, primarily to be used for charging electric vehicles that stop to charge. The reason for choosing the folding solution is to address issues, especially with snow. When the weather is bad, they can be folded up, and when the sun comes out, they can be unfolded again. A fixed solution would likely have snow accumulation for much of the winter.
The solar panels will be situated six meters above the ground, allowing trucks and other tall vehicles to easily pass underneath. The solution is provided by dhp technology and is set to start construction next year, with completion expected by 2027.
